Overview
What is Cartão de Cidadão?
The Cartão de Cidadão is Portugal's citizen card, the primary national identity document for Portuguese citizens. It is a multipurpose chip-based card that replaced several separate documents, and it supports strong online authentication and qualified electronic signatures for access to public and private digital services.
Verification uses the certificates held on the card's chip. The person presents the card to a reader and enters their authentication PIN, and the scheme confirms the identity linked to the card and can return verified details such as the person's name and date of birth. The card carries the citizen's civil identification number as its core identifier. The customer proves who they are directly with their existing card and PIN, so there is no document upload or selfie step.
